Domenico Ghirlandaio's Last Supper :

The Wedding Banquet in Mamma Roma :

Pasolini might not necessarily have been trying to evoke a specific rendition of the Last Supper, but that was certainly the general image which he had in mind when filming the wedding banquet scene in the beginning of Mamma Roma. I chose to use Ghirlandaio's version because I thought it presented the most interesting parallels. Ghirlandaio places Judas in front of the table, isolated from the rest of the group in a very prominent way. This is where Pasolini places the pigs, and later in this scene Mamma Roma gets up and stands there in front of the bride and groom much like Judas sits in front of Christ and the apostle who sleeps on Christ's shoulder. She is given the Judas role in this scene, for she is the betrayer of her son's relation to nature.
